5-Day Challenge: 2 word phrases!
Kudos to you for returning for Day 2 of the 5 day challenge! This week’s challenge will highlight an evidence-based technique to implement daily to help your toddler transition from single words to two-word phrases!
DAY 2
FOCUS: ADJECTIVE + NOUN
Here’s how to play:
Grab 3-5 objects that are easy to describe (food, clothes, toys)
Hold up one item at a time and describe it in a short adjective + noun phrase:
Examples: “red shirt!” “big truck!”
Let your toddler explore the item after you’ve described it using this phrase 2x. Say the phrase one last time while they are exploring the object.
Switch items as quickly as needed to keep it fast-paced according to your toddler’s attention span.
Make it silly!
Try using silly voices, quietly/loudly, with gestures to keep your little one engaged.
Depending on your toddler’s current understanding of speech, you can “accidentally” say the wrong adjective and let them “correct” you. Correct yourself if needed. “Little ball? Noooo, BIG ball!”
Quick Tip for You:
When toddlers hear the same two-word patterns in different settings, they’re more likely to try them on their own. Describe things during snack time, outside, or in the bath too!
Tomorrow will be all about your toddler’s favorite power phrase: more (something)!
See you here tomorrow for Day 3!
Best,
Emily
